The JWST is well on its way to achieving iconic cultural status.
News, Blogs, Forums, and Twitter are buzzing with every release, and the President did a press release of the first images. This series attempts to capture the telescope’s unique aesthetic with its brutalist, utilitarian, and somewhat recursive qualities.
Let's go over the design features of this Cap and what they mean real quick.
The primary mirror is made up of 18 golden beryllium-coated hexagonal mirrors, which combine into a single larger hexagon mirror, giving the telescope its distinctive appearance. They focus the faintest and oldest light in the galaxy into the secondary mirror on the far side of the foldable tripod. From there the photons are guided into the optics element at the center of the structure.
The Sunshield, with its five layers of thin grey foil, reflects both the sun's and the instrument's heat rays away from the telescope to allow the mirrors to operate at extremely low temperatures. This is important, because heat is synonymous with energetic vibration, and more of it would interfere with the photons that reflect on the mirrors, thus blurring the resulting measurements.
This design features these dominant elements and has them embroidered on the most authentic Trucker Cap we could find.
